All about Aerial class
Here at LEA we offer many different classes with a wide variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, contemporary/lyrical, hip hop and our brand-new class, Aerial. Aerial is an extremely fun class filled to the brim awesome tricks as well as building overall body strength.
So, you may be wondering…
‘What is aerial?’
Aerial is one of the most challenging, yet most awe inspiring and versatile dance forms. Aerial artists climb, twist, spin, drop, and contort themselves on fabric curtain sheets that hang from the ceiling. The beauty of the silky material wrapping around the aerialists body is matched only by the breath-taking courage it takes to be suspended high above the ground.
Aerial is the broad term for a style of modern dance that incorporates the use of hanging equipment, also called aerial apparatuses.
At LEA we have two main apparatuses for our aerial class:
⁃ Silks: two pieces of draped fabric
⁃ Lyre- A hoop
What do I need to wear or bring to Aerial class?
1. Leggings or tight-fitting, stretchy pants that cover the back of the knee.
2. A shirt that covers your torso.
3. Remove pieces of jewellery that could get caught on the fabric.
4. Footwear does not matter because you will be barefoot in the class.
5. Water! And lots of it!
What should I do between classes?
Work out your upper body and core in order to make holding yourself on the apparatus easier. Stretching on a regular basis will also be very beneficial. Just remember to exercise with proper form, and not to overstretch as these can cause injuries.
Do I need to be strong to start Aerial?
You don’t need a ton of upper body strength to start, but if you stick with it you might develop some serious guns!
How can I be safe during Aerial class?
Aerial involves a lot of tricks and stunts that are majority of the time, suspended high off the ground. So, how can we be safe during Aerial? Turn those listening ears on and always listen to your teachers instructions; make sure to watch your peers when they are on the apparatus, so you can learn from them and continue to improve; never do anything without help from your teacher first so that you know exactly what you need to do to achieve that skill safely; and
never do anything without supervision! With that being said, aerial should be fun and enjoyable for everyone participating and is all about trying new things to push our skills to the next level.
Aerial is an AWESOME class and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a challenge and learning!
I hope to see you at the next class 🙂
